One of the most famous and long term murder cases in Dutch history: the murder of widow Winterberg in Deventer. During a research of years, missing pieces were hard to find and the pieces that were actually there would just not fit together. Investigative journalist Bas Haan wrote a book about the case - and Sander Burger decided to make a film of that in his turn.

In 1999, rich widow Jaqueline Winterberg was brutally stabbed to death in her villa in Dutch city Deventer. During the following investigation, it would just not become clear what exactly had happened and that raised the question whether someone had been tampering with evidence. Evidence on which the sentence of Winterberg's tax consultant was eventually based, while someone else was also still realistically suspected: the handyman.

This film follows investigative journalist Bas Haan, who becomes more and more drawn to and convinced by the people accusing Winterberg's handyman of the murder. The media also play their part in the persuasiveness of this story - but are they not creating their own monster? In the meantime, the lives of the handyman and his wife are becoming a nightmare. Bas Haan keeps trying to fight the conspiracy theories with facts, but to his frustration notices that representation always wins from reality. He decides to go to the edge of it all: has someone been wrongly convicted or not? Who of the two suspects actually is the innocent victim here?
