Rudy Plaate is one of the most important founders of Curaçao's contemporary musical culture. His hit Atardi is considered the unofficial national anthem of Aruba and Curaçao. Film maker Selwyn de Wind interviewed Rudy's family and friends and gathered archive footage of the musician's highs and lows for five years. Everything comes together in this intimate film portrait.

The high-spirited Rudy Plaate developed into one of the greatest musicians of the ABC islands. He produced more than 400 songs, in which he always sung about and praised the life and beauty of his beloved island. De Wind gives an impression of how Plaate used both his entrepeneurship and musical gifts to give popular music from Curaçao a boost. He sang in Papiamento, for example, which was unprecedented in the second half of the 20th century, and shaped the musical culture of Curaçao with his unique, playful and innovative style.

ATARDI is a documentary driven by music, responding to the styles and heritage of Curaçao's musical evolution. The film illustrates how Plaate helped building it's basis though a combination of interviews with family, friends and experts and archive material.
