Satoko and her husband are happy together, but can't have kids together. They decide to opt for adoption and raise a boy that has been conceived in a tempest of teenage love. Years later, a young woman suddenly appears at their doorstep, claiming to be the boy's mother. She demands her son back or a large sum of money. Satoko decides to listen to her story instead of sending her away. That makes for a very humane film, in the stunning visual style director Naomi Kawase is known for.
