A young couple's relationship is tested when they move in with the notorious horror writer Shirley Jackson and her husband.

Fred and Rose move to a small village in Vermont, hoping for Fred to find a job there. Professor Stanley Hyman offers them to move in with him and his wife - on one condition. Rose will have to take care of the household and of infamous horror writer Shirley Jackson. Rose agrees. And although she handles the unusual domesticities of the excentric couple with disgust, she starts bonding slowly with Shirley, in an extraordinary way that puts her relationship with Fred on edge.
