When wood carver Geppetto (Oscar winning actor Roberto Benigni) cuts a beautiful doll out of a wooden block, something magical happens. The bold doll suddenly starts talking and appears to be able to walk, run and eat like every little boy can. Geppetto names him Pinocchio and raises him like he is his son. But Pinocchio is not the most naturally good behaving boy. He is easily distracted and gets himself into trouble all the time. That leads to him being deceived, kidnapped, and hunted by bandits in a world with the most wonderful fantasy creatures.
While he ends up in the stomach of a whale, a toy land and the field of wonders, Pinocchio's good friend the fairy tries to make the little living doll see that his biggest dream, becoming a real boy of flesh and blood, will only come true when Pinocchio starts changing his behaviour for the better.
