While the Bangladeshi Fahim and his father wait for their request for political asylum to be approved, chess master Sylvain teaches Fahim to play the game. By taking part in a competition and eventually becoming France's champion, Fahim hopes to be able to stay in France.

Fahim and his father have safely fled from Bangladesh, but their battle for safety does not end when they arrive in Paris. Living with the continuous uncertainty of having to leave the country, they are waiting for the response to their application for asylum. In the mean time, Fahim learns how to play chess. But when the national championships are about to start, Fahim threatens to be deported. He sees only one solution: become France's champion in chess. Based on a true story.
