Arts in Cinema | Concerto: A Beethoven Journey

Phil Grabsky

In four years time, Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes recorded five piano concerts with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra - he conducts from the piano - followed by a world tour. In this documentary Andsnes talks enthusiastically and with a great deal of knowledge about the concerts - from the vital and virtuoso youth works to the epic, highly original last three.

Andsnes devoted himself entirely to Beethoven (1770-1827), whom he considered the greatest composer of all time. By concentrating on one composer, he can dig deeper, with the ultimate goal of better understanding his music.

In the ambitious works full of bold innovations you can hear Beethoven struggling with his increasing deafness and alternating feelings of despair, isolation and suffering with a celebration of freedom, both musically and politically. Andsnes' insightful reflections are interspersed with passages from Beethoven's letters, which deal with (a lack of) money, health problems and love.
